On Walden's
“In wildness is the preservation of the world.”
Henry David Thoreau 1862
We don’t have any connection to Thoreau’s Walden but his words ring as true in today’s Yukon as they did in mid-1800s Massachusetts.
And when it comes to “wildness” worth preserving, there is none greater than the Peel watershed.
Since we first ventured into the region more than 20 years ago, not much has changed. The Peel’s major tributaries still rush headlong to the Mackenzie River which, in turns, pours into the Beaufort Sea; its majestic mountain ranges still tower over valleys rich with roaming wildlife; and travellers still flock from around the world to pay homage to this wilderness mecca.
During the past two decades, we’ve guided many of these visitors down the Wind, Snake, Hart, Blackstone and Bonnet Plume Rivers - mostly by canoe. One of our most memorable trips was the Three Rivers Journey, a national campaign organized by CPAWS-Yukon to raise awareness of the magnificence of the Peel. We’ve also tailored trips for community-based projects, media visitors and government-sponsored research expeditions.
To add to our own knowledge base, we’ve gone in search of the elusive Wind City (a former goldrush camp), followed the trail of the Lost Patrol down the Little Wind River and ran dogteams along the Wind and Hart River trails.
Still our curiosity is far from satisfied.
With so many corners of this vast watershed yet to explore, we continue to log many more wilderness miles through this magical wild place. If you’d like to visit the Peel or have any questions about the work that we do, please contact us.
